The USA continues to be the most favorable destination for masters in USA universities for international students, particularly for Indian students, and it is not tough to see why. Major reasons for attracting so many international students for Masters in USA is the quality of education and the extensive range of universities and the kind of financial support that they get from the US universities. There are nearly about 4000 universities in USA which offers wide ranging specialized courses. Masters in the USA Universities offer flexibility in choosing their field of interest. US is considered to be the home for a lot of research work that is going around the world and thus offer a standardized and quality education to all international students.

Most Universities offer Master of Science (MS) degree in USA and Master of Engineering (M.Engg.) degrees in USA of which MS degrees are popular among the students. MS in US is usually a two year degree program. Students are required to complete 32-36 credits to get a Masters degree in USA depending upon the course and the university. MS in Computer Science, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Information Systems, MBA are some of the preferred courses that most of the International students opting for. Major admission intakes for most of the US universities are Fall (August session) and the Spring (January session). Some universities also offer summer (May-June session).


It is suggested that one should start their application process well in advance as most universities in US has their own application deadline. Students are advised to apply to the universities at least 6-8 months prior to the admission intake. Admission for a Masters degree in US universities is depend on several factors out of which the academic credentials are very important. Apart from a good academic percentage in their under graduate education, students should also have decent TOEFL and GRE test scores. Ideal scores to apply for most of the universities can be anywhere around 80+ in TOEFL and 300+ out of 340 on the new GRE pattern (1050-1100 on the old pattern of the GRE). Management program like MBA requires GMAT with scores in the range of 450-650.

High standard institutions may require higher test scores and percentage. There are quite few Universities which offer admission to Masters in USA for much lesser scores also. The other major deciding factors are the recommendation letters and personal statement. Most universities requires three recommendation letters from three different professors who had taught the student at their under graduate level. Students applying to Masters in USA are required to submit a personal statement also called as SOP (Statement of Purpose) outlining their academic achievements and their career plans.

Cost of Education

Cost of the Masters in USA is quite reasonable. Tuition fee for the Masters degree in USA will be in the range $8,000 – $16,000 depending up on the university, program and the location. Financial Aid is available for MS in USA in most of the universities for international students. Universities assist the meritorious students financially in many ways like partial or full tuition fee waiver, scholarships, assistantships etc. Almost 70% of International students at the Masters in USA get financial aid in some or the other form mainly with scholarships, tuition and research assistantships.

Job Opportunities

All international students are allowed to work part time for 20 hrs. per week while pursing their graduate education and full time during the vacations. Students are eligible to apply for internships or for CPT (Curricular Practical Training) after one year of education in US universities. CPT will normally be allowed for one year in between the Masters Programs in USA. On successful completion of their Masters in USA, students are eligible to apply for OPT (Optional Practical Training) for a period of 29 months for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related courses and for a period of one year for Management related courses like MBA. Under OPT scheme, students are allowed to work full time.
